Uganda’s smallest savanna park (370sq km) lies enroute from Kampala to Bwindi. Lying in the part of Uganda covered in extensive acacia woodland, mburo has markedly different fauna to other reserves.
Lake Mburo National Park is a mosaic of habitats including open water, wetland, grassland, woodland and forest patches supports a diverse population of herbivores including species such as impala, zebra, eland and tpi that are rare or absent in other Ugandan parks. This park is also a welcome break on the road from Kampala to the gorilla parks.
Lake Mburo is the best place in the country to see the gingatic antelope, as well as zebra, topi, impala, and several acacia associated birds. The five lakes within the park attract hippos, crocodiles and a variety of water birds, while fringing swamps hide secretive papyrus specialists suchas the sitatunga antelope and red, black and yellow papyrus gonalek.
Getting There; Lake Mburo national park is found in Mbarara district, 3.5 hours drive from Kampala on Mbarara Kampala highway. Turn left at 13 km (Akageti) past Lyantonde, which then brings you to Sanga gate. Both junctions have clearly labeled sign posts. It is 13 km from Sanga trading centre of Sanga gate, 5 km from the main road to Nshara gate and about 20 minutes drive from Rwonyo Park Head quarters.
Best Time to Visit Lake Mburo National Park
Lake Mburo National Park is open year-round, but the best wildlife viewing is during the dry seasons—from June to August and December to February. During these months, animals gather around water sources, and the roads are easier to navigate.
The wet seasons (March to May and September to November) transform the park into a lush, green paradise. Birdwatching is excellent during these months, with many migratory species present. However, the trails can be slippery, and some roads may be more challenging for self-drive visitors.
